THE SHADOW PUPPET WORKSHOP invigorates Jewish learning by offering experiential, participatory, performance-based programming.

Using the ancient art of shadow puppetry, in which shadows are cast upon a lit screen, Jewish stories and folktales from around the world are brought to life.

Designed for both formal and informal educational settings, and including intergenerational and cross-cultural programming, THE SHADOW PUPPET WORKSHOP touches the many strands of the Jewish community. We foster a love of Jewish stories that inspires a life of Jewish learning.

  • BIBLICAL STORIES - including the Creation story, Noah's Ark, and the Exodus from Egypt.

  • JEWISH HOLIDAYS - including Shabbat, Hanukkah, Tu B'Shevat, Purim, Passover, and Yom HaShoah.

  • JEWISH VALUES - including Bal Tash'hit, Bikkur Holim, and Rodef Shalom.

  • JEWISH AMERICAN HISTORY - including immigration from 1654 through the 20th century.

  • JEWISH WORLD FOLKTALES - including Chelm, Elijah, and K'tonton stories.

These programs can be adapted to a wide range of settings. We also develop new programs in response to the particular needs of our partnering organizations.

The Shadow Puppet Workshop partners with a variety of Jewish institutions, including:

  • Hebrew Schools
  • Day Schools
  • Synagogues
  • Jewish Community Centers
  • Summer Camps
  • Cultural Institutions

THE SHADOW PUPPET WORKSHOP programs introduce themes in an exciting way, conclude studies with a rewarding capstone experience, or offer an engaging stand-alone enrichment opportunity.

Workshops are appropriate for Pre-K through Grade 6, and lend themselves to both intergenerational and family programming, in which all ages work together.

SINGLE AND MULTI-SESSION WORKSHOPS begin with a short shadow puppet performance. The participants then adapt another story based on a chosen theme.

Working with black poster-board, scissors, and their imaginations, they create their own puppets and scenery.

After rehearsing, a magical transformation of their work takes place; narration, movement, and special effects come together, cardboard cutouts take on distinct personalities, and the story comes to life!

ASSEMBLIES are designed to allow participants that have just completed shadow puppetry workshops to share what they have learned with the wider community.
